A thought about King and Queen

I was reluctant to participate last year. I was almost happy at the thought of possibly not being able to participate because of the fact that I was in the process of becoming a coach. But as it turned out I was allowed to participate. At the time I did not believe I belonged in the same gym as Coxhead, Sam B, Mike T, and Faby. They were my pick to take the top spots. Even though I believed the odds were not in my favor I still believed that I had an outside chance to make podium.

If you have ever seen the movie "Little Giants" you can probably recall the scene at half time when the Little Giants want to quit. Rick Moranis' character (Danny O'Shea) talks to them about how everyday he would race is brother Kevin O'Shea(Ed O'Neill aka Al Bundy) down Cherry Hill. He tells them about how Kevin would beat him everyday. But one time, just one time... Danny beats Kevin. He then talks about how the Cowboys would probably beat the Little Giants 99 out 100 times. But that still leaves 1 time. The guys I mentioned before consistently and routinely beat me at WODs 99 out of 100 probably. BUT! BUT! There was this 1 time...

I hope that everyone that is eligible to participate, will do so. Because you never know.... This could be your 1 TIME!! You'll never know unless you give it shot!!!!

I'm bummed that we'll be away during K+Q but I do encourage people to do the workouts. Keith, you might have put yourself in as an underdog, but I think a lot of people would have put you right in that group, too.

Most of our members workout because they want to look good and feel good, not necessarily for the sport of fitness. This is a great day to basically get some good workouts in and more importantly, push yourself to new limits, even if you don't intend to be "competitive." Even though it's the same group of people you would workout with, the competition atmosphere makes you push that extra 1%. You'll probably realize that you're capable of much more than what you do at the normal 6am, nooner, 5:30, etc. It's kind of a light bulb moment of "wow, I never knew I could push myself like that!"

And just to ease your mind, most of the workouts will be designed so that anyone can do them. (Similar to the Open)Aimee and Jason do the programming, but I imagine the final workout will have the top ranked people and include higher skill/heavier weights.

So while some will do K+Q to compete against others, us coaches encourage you to do it for yourself. To see what your limits are. To gain confidence and grow a little bit better. And yeah, to have a drink or two with friends.

I will be on vaca as well during King and Queen this year, but it was so much fun!!!! I would encourage every one to do it. You definitely push yourself beyond what you could imagine and just to see every one compete and cheer you on is awesome. Don't think twice about signing up, you will not regret it!!!!

To throw in my two cents on K&Q: if you thought the excitement during the Saturday Open wods was amazing you haven't seen anything yet.

It's a great chance to show your parents, family, friends what this "Crossfit" is really about - community!
