Athlete and NEW Coach Spotlight - Kalyn

Welcome to our community - As of August 28th, Coach Kalyn will be picking up 6:30 PM on Monday and Wednesday as well as 5:30 on Thursday! We are so excited to welcome her to our team of established coaches and professionals!

How long have you been CrossFitting?
Six years this fall!

What’s your biggest strength inside and out of the gym?
I’d have to say my work ethic, no matter the task, I’m all in.

What’s your favorite CrossFit Benchmark workout and why?
Nancy, I love running and overhead squats

What goals are you currently working on in the gym?
So many but the top three right now are stringing muscle ups, becoming a better coach, and getting stronger lats.

How long have you been coaching and what got you into it?
I’ve been coaching CrossFit for 3 years.
I wanted to share my passion for CrossFit with others and help them in their own health/fitness journey.

What do you like to do in your free time Watch F1, hang out with my dog, and see local Philly bands.

As we welcome Kalyn here are a few more nuggets about her journey and what she is brining to CFKOP...

Sports, fitness, and coaching have always been large parts of my life. I’ve competed competitively and instructed classes in Tang Soo Do, a Korean martial art, since I was eight years old and hold the rank of third degree black belt. In grade school I discovered my love for running and joined the track and cross country team running mid and long distances. While earning my bachelors degree at Kutztown University, I started long distance running and weight training. In 2011 I completed my first marathon and second in 2014. After graduating college I continued distance running but missed working out with others, so in 2017 I decided to try CrossFit. Like many, I fell in love with the sport, environment, and friends I made along the way and CrossFit truly changed my adult life allowing me to still be an athlete. In 2021 I made the individual quarterfinals and decided I wanted to share my passion for CrossFit with others. That same month I became a CrossFit Level-1 Coach. My goal as a coach is to support you in your own health and fitness journey, while having fun along the way!

March Athlete of the Month: Sam Bowen

Hometown: Collegeville, PA

Current Location: King of Prussia

Age: 27

Occupation: Cyber Security Sales

College: Randolph Macon College

How long have you been a CrossFitter? 3 years

Did you ever play sports? Yes, Soccer, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse. ended up playing college Soccer

Got some cool (or uncool) hobbies you'd like to share? I like to Golf a lot.

What has been your biggest achievement at CrossFit in general? Honestly everything. It’s nice to have something where you can constantly get better.

What skill have you been working on during 2021? Gymnastics much to my chagrin.

Goals for the rest of this year? 500 Pound squat and better overall at Gymnastic movements

What's your favorite WOD? Probably Nancy. That or any heavy barbell cycle that involves cardio too.

How about your favorite food/snacks? Everything that they tell you not to eat at crossfit. But pizza is my favorite.

What is the craziest workout outside of CF you have ever done? I use to run this circuit that I made up one day training for soccer it would be a combination of Long runs, sprints, and hill runs.

What’s your least favorite WOD? Anything with high gymnastic skill set.

Favorite lift/movement? Most people will think I will say squatting. But I actually have come to enjoy Double Unders due to the fact that’s all we did in January.

What’s your least favorite lift/movement? All of the gymnastic movements.

What’s your favorite piece of workout "gear"? It’s controversial but I actually love the assault bike.

What would you say is your biggest improvement since starting CF? Probably my clean. I really struggled early on with the clean.

Who is your favorite coach? Probably too difficult to say. Aimee’s always there to push me whether it be as a coach or when working out together. Manisha puts up with my shenanigans a lot. She pushes me in gymnastics and despises when I try to do ring rows every workout. So my improvement in gymnastics is definitely attributed to her not allowing me to slack. Also the rest of the coaching staff is awesome. They always make you feel welcome for any class.

PR's to mention? Goals Reached? Nutrition highlights?

Getting on the board for the CrossFit total was really cool. But overall trying to get nutrition in check for 2021 is a big goal for me.

November Athletes of the Month: Cate Grosskopf and Tyler Kanski

Q&A Cate Grosskopf and Tyler Kanski

Hometown:
Cate: Hingham, Massachusetts
Tyler: Hometown: Normal, Illinois

Current Location:
Cate: Villanova, PA
Tyler: Villanova, PA

Age:
Cate: 21
Tyler: 21

Occupation:
Cate: Student
Tyler: Student at Villanova currently; working in Franchise Development after graduation.

College:
Cate: Villanova University
Tyler: Villanova University

How long have you been a CrossFitter?
Cate: I’ve been doing CrossFit for about 3.5 years; I started CrossFit right at the beginning of my first year at Villanova.
Tyler: It will be 3 years this January.

Did you ever play sports?
Cate: I played varsity soccer, tennis, and ran track in high school!
Tyler: If you consider it a sport, I played golf all 4 years of high school.

Got some cool (or uncool) hobbies you'd like to share?
Cate: One of my big hobbies has been cooking and baking. I put a lot of time and energy into nutrition and learning about food, and I love finding healthy and creative recipes to cook for my family and for meal prepping in my apartment. I also bake a TON of banana bread.
Tyler: In my free time, I like to read, play golf, and recently I have started cooking as I no longer have a meal plan at school.

What has been your biggest achievement at CrossFit in general?
Cate: My biggest achievement at CrossFit in general was getting my first bar muscle up. When I first started CrossFit a few years ago, it took me a year to do my first strict pull up. Ever since then, my goal has been to build up to a bar muscle up, and I finally got one about a month ago!
Tyler: In general, my biggest achievement has been my overall increase in strength. I remember
freshman year when I could barely snatch 95 pounds. Recently I was able to get on the board
for the snatch + overhead squat lift complex and that was a really exciting moment for me.

What skill have you been working on during 2020?
Cate: I’ve been working a lot on my bench press lately. Since quarantine started back in March, I’ve bench pressed every single Monday either in my basement or now at the gym at school. It’s honestly helped a lot of my CrossFit progress overall; my dips, push-ups, and shoulder press movements have gotten so much stronger. It’s been so cool to see how working on a foundational lift helps other movements!
Tyler: Life skills or crossfit skills? Lately, I have been trying to learn video editing/ content creation
skills through adobe’s software. As far as crossfit, my latest venture has been the deficit hand
stand push up and the strict press. I just want to get stronger in those areas.

Goals for the rest of this year? CrossFit goals?
Cate: Improving my clean form, maxing the hell out of my deadlift, and definitely going for a ring muscle up.mReal life goals? Getting good grades, graduating college, getting a job. You know, the normal stuff.
Tyler: With the rest of the year, I want to keep focusing on school and fitness and take it one day at a
time and do the best I can each and every day.

What's your favorite WOD?
Cate: I would say Diane is my favorite. I also really like doing Murph every year!
Tyler: My favorite wod is JT. I really like heavy cleans and hand stand push ups. I also like how the
wod has both an ascending and descending ladder between the movements.

How about your favorite food/snacks?
Cate: Ice cream is my favorite food of all time. Mint chocolate chip or mint oreo are my favorite flavors. I honestly have an ice cream obsession and I will never say no to eating it. Other foods I like are tortilla chips, avocados/guacamole, sweet potatoes, zucchini, chicken parmesan, seafood, and steak.
Tyler: I love a good burger with sweet potato fries.

What is the craziest workout outside of CF you have ever done?
Cate: One summer I hiked a bunch of peaks of the Presidential Mountain Range in New Hampshire with some friends. We hiked Mount Washington, Mount Clay, Mount Jefferson, and some of Mount Adams. It ended up being an 11-hour hike and we had to sprint down the mountain at the end to avoid getting stuck in the dark!
Tyler: I have done a few half century bike rides. One of those rides was through Grand Teton National
Park in Wyoming. At the halfway point of the ride there was a 3 miles hill that really kicked my
butt. It was a lot more fun going down on the way back.

What’s your least favorite WOD?
Cate: Nasty Nancy was honestly the worst WOD I’ve ever done in my whole life. I genuinely shed a tear during that workout, and I will never, ever do that again. Unless Aimee programs it again. Praying she doesn’t.
Tyler: My least favorite WOD is Kalsu. Never before had I struggled through a WOD like Kalsu. I still
haven’t done it Rx to this day, and don’t think I ever will.

Favorite lift/movement?
Cate: I love deadlifts, toes to bar, and double unders. Oh, and running. But that’s definitely a hot take.
Tyler: My favorite lift is bench press. I also really enjoy snatching.

What’s your least favorite lift/movement?
Cate: The overhead squat will forever be my nemesis. Worst movement of all time. Absolutely horrible.
Tyler: My least favorite lift is the deadlift. It is a lift I would like to improve on in the future.

Whats your favorite piece of workout "gear"?
Cate: My purple Metcons and my purple lifting belt! I like purple, lol.
Tyler: No question… I love my lifting belt.

What would you say is your biggest improvement since starting CF?
Cate: Definitely my overall strength. I used to not even be able to handle an empty barbell, and now my strength has grown astronomically. I have also improved my mental attitude towards CrossFit. I used to get very frustrated with my progress (or lack thereof), but I’ve learned that improving strength and skill takes time, and it pays off with practice.
Tyler: Since starting crossfit, I have seen my cardio improve drastically. I remember my first crossfit
wod was an AMRAP or thrusters, pullups and a 400 meter run, and I think in 15 minutes I got 1
round. I think today, I could definitely get 2 rounds.

Who is your favorite coach?
Cate: Jenna, hands down. She has known me since my freshman year and has been my CrossFit role model, she pushes me to be better in each workout, and I’m so happy that she has become a really good friend of mine. Seeing her almost every single day at 2:30 brightens my day! I also want to give a big shout out to Aimee for being so welcoming to me and CrossFit Villanova. Without you, we wouldn’t be a part of the amazing CrossFit KOP community!
Tyler: Without a doubt Jenna. She has made crossfit so much fun these past few years and I am very
thankful. She’s an amazing coach and friend. When I joined the crossfit club my freshman year,
a week in, the gym we were at closed and we didn’t know if the club would survive. Aimee and
crossfit KOP let us join and kept the club alive. In doing so, I have met so many amazing people
and fostered great relationships that I never would have. Thank you Aimee and thank you Jenna

PR's to mention? Goals Reached? Nutrition highlights?
Cate: I recently PR’d my 3RM deadlift, I can now bench press 120#, and I FINALLY hit a 140# clean. My goals are to keep improving, stay healthy, and to keep having fun :)
Tyler: I recently PR’d my snatch and clean in the last month. That was exciting because I’ve recently
started doing more extracurricular running, so it was nice to still keep adding strength despite
the increased cardio.

Athletes of the Month: Nikki and Neil

Hometown:
Nikki: Hamilton, NJ/ Neil: Collingdale, PA (Delco)

Current Location: Conshohocken, PA moving to Manayunk, PA

Age:
Nikki: 29/ Neil: 30

Occupation:
Nikki: Foot and Ankle, Podiatry Resident Physician at Main Line Health/ Neil: Full- Time Law Student

College:
Nikki: The College New Jersey/ Neil: United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland

How long have you been a CrossFitter?
Nikki: Since 2013/ Neil: Over 2 years

Did you ever play sports?
Nikki: College Soccer at The College of New Jersey/ Neil: I played football, basketball, baseball, and track growing up. I played football in high school and also in college. I was a linebacker and defensive end.

Got some cool (or uncool) hobbies you'd like to share?
Nikki: I'm pretty simple, good company and a nice sunny day makes me happy. I love traveling to the beach or to anywhere I can hang out in the sun. / Neil: I’ve been trying to work on my golf game recently. I really enjoy playing but for some reason I tend to spend more time in the woods and in the sand than on the actual green.

What has been your biggest achievement at CrossFit in general?
Nikki: Fran 3:30 awhile ago/ Neil: I would say my biggest improvement is being able to do more of the gymnastic movements. I got my first Bar-Muscle up about a year ago and it was a great feeling.

What skill had you been working on all during 2018, and did they become successes?
Nikki: I always wanted to be better at strict pull ups, it's seriously why I joined CF to be able to do pull ups. I hit 10 strict pull ups in a row one day at CFKOP (I haven't gotten to that since) but it was a good day/ Neil: Double unders for sure. I have made improvements but I still end up whipping myself in the arms more than stringing together sets.

Goals for the whole 2019 year?
Nikki: Butterfly pull ups/ Neil: Be more consistent and disciplined in my training. It may sound cliché but I feel like these two characteristics will help anybody accomplish any goal. I can honestly say every class, no matter how exhausting the WOD, I come out feeling accomplished. I have definitely been trying to improve my nutrition as well, but I really love a good Hoagie ever now and then.

What's your favorite WOD?
Nikki: I really enjoyed Barbara, Nancy, Fight Gone Bad and 19.5. Anything with lots of reps and that includes thrusters, wall balls, and a good squat clean I'm game for/ Neil: Cindy

How about your favorite food/snacks?
Nikki: I love anything with rice - It's weird, I know/ Neil: BBQ Ribs, Enlighten Ice Cream, and anything with Peanut Butter in it.

What is the craziest workout outside of CF you have ever done?
Nikki: College, we used to run 2 miles in under 12 minutes every year - it was more the anticipation because I could never sleep the night before. In high school we did a work out called 7 and everyone cried/ Neil: During my training in the Marine Corps, we had to complete an Obstacle Course and Endurance Course that was built throughout the woods of Quantico, VA. The length of the course was about six miles and we had to run it in full uniform with all our equipment.

What’s your least favorite WOD? Nikki: Max Snatch

Favorite lift/movement?
Nikki: Thruster and Wall Balls/ Neil: Snatches

What’s your least favorite lift/movement?
Nikki: Snatch, who does that/ Neil: Thrusters and Burpees

Whats your favorite piece of workout "gear"?
Nikki: I like lululemon anything. Mama always told me if you look good you play good. Might start following Aimee and wear earrings. / Neil: wrist straps

Who is your favorite coach? Nikki: You are all my favorite in different ways. I can love one more than the other because you all offer something different. When Aimee is coaching I am scared to death and bring my A game. When Tim Papas is coaching I know he's timing my runs. When Steph is coaching I know she's going to make me put more weight on the bar. Manisha isn't going to let me modify and she's going to push me to work on form. Jenna is going to believe in me and give me good tips. Rachel is going to need coffee before class and give cues that actually makes sense "heels on the ground, push through your heels" during heavy KBS just makes life easier because of her. Justin always makes me smile, he's positive and pushes me to challenge myself and work on injury prevention as well. Evie has great playlists and her warm ups are hard which I love. Keith has good pointers and always brings a fun sarcastic and playful atmosphere to class/ Neil: There’s no way I could pick out one coach as my favorite. Every one of them at KOP is truly phenomenal at coaching and motivating members. Each coach has a different style to their class that makes each class exciting and a different learning experience. I feel each coach has helped me improve in different ways. Since finishing playing football in college, I never really expected to have this level of coaching and drive to push myself, but since starting CF at KOP I have found a similar passion again. CFKOP has been a great place to meet friends, learn new skills, get more fit, be competitive and have fun all at the same time. I believe it is this level of commitment from the coaches, as well as the community, that truly separates this gym from all the rest. Every CF I belong to in the future will be fighting to live up to the standard that has been set by KOP. I just want to thank every coach for their hard work and commitment in helping me improve during 60 minutes a day.

PR's to mention? Goals Reached? Nutrition highlights? Nikki: I never thought I would lift "heavy" after I broke my wrist. I hit my PR since wrist break with a hang squat clean 150 and C&J at CFKOP - these coaches and community have provided such a positive atmosphere that I had the courage to test it out. I surprised myself at some of the open WODs too. Nutrition I haven't figured out yet, woof - It's definitely a work in progress. Overall, I really want to thank this community and coaches for everything. You guys give me an hour of happiness during my busy days and my non busy days, you bring me more joy than you know.

March Athlete of the Month

Congratulations Angelo

Hometown: Schwenksville, PA

Current Location: Limerick, PA

Age: 23

Occupation: Operations Associate at Vanguard

College: Eastern University

How long have you been a CrossFitter? 1.5 years

Did you ever play sports? Baseball at Eastern

Got some cool (or uncool) hobbies you'd like to share? Mostly uncool hobbies like reading and learning new things about exercise.

What has been your biggest achievement at CrossFit in the whole 2017 year? PR’ing a lot of contrasting things during the year. My strength improved a lot while also getting better at endurance based work .

What do you feel that you still need to work on? Everything. That’s the cool part about crossfit because you really can’t be “good enough” at anything.

Goals for this year? Have a better attitude during workouts I struggle in and just keep making small daily improvements.

What's your favorite WOD? Helen, Fran, and Endurance Class

How about your favorite food/snacks? Kodiak Cakes and Burritos from Cal Tort

What is the craziest workout outside of CF you have ever done? I did a squat program for October, squatting 6 days per week on top of doing crossfit. I was pretty sore for the whole month, but got really strong.

What’s your least favorite WOD? Nancy Favorite lift/movement? Squats, Cleans

What’s your least favorite lift/movement? Heavy Snatches and overhead squats

What skill are you planning on working on as the new year 2018 is here? Getting stronger at the Olympic Lifts, Ring Muscle Ups

Whats your favorite piece of workout "gear"?
My lifting belt

What you say is your biggest improvement since starting CF? I’ve just gotten way more well rounded as an athlete and my body composition has continued to improve.

Who is your favorite coach? This isn’t a fair question. I’ve gotten so much from all the coaches at KOP. All the coaches who go to Saturday morning competitors class and push us to the limit deserve a special shout out though.

PR's to mention? Goals Reached? Nutrition highlights?.. 30 rounds of Cindy is something I’m pretty happy about. But, I don’t want to feel that pain again for a long time

11.01.2017

Athlete of the Month

Congratulations Katie!

Hometown: Warminster, PA
Current Location: King of Prussia, PA
Age: 38
Occupation: teacher (currently preschool!)
College: Lancaster Bible College and I'm taking grad classes at Eastern University

How long have you been a CrossFitter? 2 years and 2 months!

Did you ever play sports? I was a cheerleader in high school and college and I ran track in high school (I was super slow then too...My nickname was the red caboose!)

Got some cool (or uncool) hobbies you'd like to share? I used to go all out with hobbies like crocheting, making my own soaps and lip balm, re-staining/painting old furniture, candle making ect. I love a good craft if it's something that I can use. I haven't delved in to the craft world in a while though.

What has been your biggest achievement at CrossFit in the 2017 year? Getting pull ups without the band and doing multiple rope climbs in a WOD.

What do you feel that you still need to work on? Absolutely everything....but the two things that come to mind the most would be making my core stronger and nutrition

Goals for the rest of this year? Stringing DU's!! Mike San told me he kept his hop in between each DU for 3 years...and that it's not a good goal to have - so I'm going to try to knock that hop out sooner than that!

What's your favorite WOD? I love anything with multiple movements involved (chipper type WOD's like filthy fifty)...I also love a good partner WOD. I always push myself harder with a partner and don't feel so defeated through the really tough and grueling moments that Crossfit likes to dish out.

How about your favorite food/snacks? I love Thai food...I could eat it every day of the week!

What is the craziest workout outside of CF you have ever done? "The Bonefrog" in June of 2017 - I went with several rock stars from the early morning crew - I'm not sure how I got invited but I did. And I really loved every minute of it. I love mud runs and obstacles - I couldn't achieve every obstacle but I still felt pretty accomplished afterward.

What’s your least favorite WOD? I really don't like to run (unless mud is involved) - so any WOD with running in it is pretty much dreadful to me (sorry coach Tim wish I had your passion!). I've done Nancy twice this year and I did beat my time this last round by a minute and a half - I was really shocked (and excited) by that!

Favorite lift/movement? I love the power snatch. I need to work on squatting with it as the weight gets heavier. I've been loving the power clean lately too! And even though I'm not proficient in them yet...I really love HSPU's.

What’s your least favorite lift/movement? I hate front squats for some reason. HATE THEM.

What skill are you planning on working on as the new year 2018 rolls on? It's not a skill but really it's my nutrition. It's always on my brain! I need Aimee's nutritional challenge every month!

Whats your favorite piece of workout "gear"? Froning SR-1F speed rope - it's the 3rd rope I've bought and 3 truly is a charm! (Thanks Jeremy!)

What you say is your biggest improvement since starting CF? My confidence for sure has improved a great deal since joining Crossfit KoP. I didn't join to gain confidence...but I gained it with out knowing I needed it. I never felt like I was really good at any sport...but as you know Crossfit covers such a wide range of movements that I can feel accomplished after a workout because it's all about me and how I can better myself. I often think "I didn't walk in to Crossfit KoP as an athlete like so many do...but I sure feel like one when I leave each day." It has also taught me about true body image - and what that means. I no longer look at myself as imperfect, I look at myself as strong.

Who is your favorite coach? I've had the privilege of getting to know a lot of the coaches and so many are my favorites for so many reasons! Steph is by far my favorite lifting coach - she's so knowledgeable and always knows what to say to get me moving in the right direction. You can just hear her passion for lifting when she coaches - plus her personal story is SO inspiring. Manisha is also a favorite - she always gives me amazing tips to improve my movements! And even though I've only taken Giulia's class a few times - she is definitely up there too. She can get me motivated and can get me to push myself like I've never been able to do before. I get to see Tim P once or twice a week too - I love his energy and his passion for running. He never makes me feel like I'm a failure and is always so stinkin' positive!! I always hear his voice when I run "pick up your knees...pump those arms....come on give it 80%, 90% now 100%!" He coaches me even when he's not there!

Aimee is by far my overall favorite coach - she's a natural, she's talented - she knows how to command a room of adults (and children!). She instructs so perfectly to where I understand exactly what I'm supposed to do to make the motion better. She can spot a mis-movement a mile away. I love that about her. If I don't hear her scream "Yeah Katie!!" during a WOD I get very disappointed with myself! She's an amazing leader and I am so grateful for her passion and for starting the community at Crossfit KoP! I love Gordy, Jason, Jenna and Keith too!! Somehow I've never had the privilege of taking Rachel's class - sorry Rachel! I hear amazing things about you!!

PR's to mention? Goals Reached? Nutrition highlights?.. PR - sticking with an exercise regiment longer that 3 months...I"ve never done that before and I owe it all to this awesome community and our amazing coaches!
