Notes:
The Who?
Dr. Izumi Tabata Phd is the researcher from Japan's National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Kanoya who proved what many fitness buff's already knew, which is short bursts of high intensity exercise resulted in more conditioning than moderate exercise for long periods of time [For example, sprints vs. jogging (p.s. I hate jogging)].
What many people do not know is that Izumi Tabata is not the originator of the Tabata protocal. The head coach of the Japanese speed skating team provided the rep scheme will Dr. Tabata researched it.

The Why?
In one of Tabata’s study, men performed tabata exercises (exercise bike) for 5 days a week for 6 weeks. At the end of the study, on an average there was a 14% increase in aerobic capacity. Additionally, the test subjects anaerobic capacity increased by 28%. By increasing the test subjects aerobic (with oxygen) and anaerobic (without oxygen) it would increase ones conditioning for both endurance related and strength related aspects of ones fitness; which is pretty sweet for crossfitters.
As a comparison, running at 70% capactiy (jogging) for 60 minutes a day for 5-6 days for 6 weeks only increased aerobic capacity by 9.5% with no change in anaerobic capacity. What does this mean? Performing 4 minutes of high intensity work is better than 60 minutes of running! Coach Glassman mentions that “these high-intensity work outs produce this dramatic aerobic benifit with out muscle waisting brought about by endurance training.” With Tabata, it is proven that you receive greater aerobic and anaerobic stimulus then endurance training while at the same time there is no atrophy.

W.O.D. 4.12.12

This workout runs every minute on the minute for 30 minutes. Start with one rep of each movement on the first minute, then add one rep every minute thereafter.

Example:
Minute One: 1 Sumo Deadlift High Pull, 1 Med Ball Clean*
Minute Two: 2 Sumo Deadlift High Pull, 2 Med Ball Clean*
Minute Three: 3 Sumo Deadlift High Pull, 3 Med Ball Clean*
Minute Four: 4 Sumo Deadlift High Pull, 4 Med Ball Clean* etc ...

Continue as long as you can adding one rep to each movement until you "miss" - until you can no longer complete all the reps within one minute. At that point you re-start on the next minute, beginning at one rep and adding up again. Your total number of reps is your final score for this WOD. So in minute one your score will be (2) in minute two your score will be (4) = overall score 6 if you were to complete two minutes of work. Its recommended that you keep track of this on a paper or counting device.

*Weight for the Med ball (14#/20) and SumoDeadlift High Pull (65#/95#).

compare to (1.21.11) and (7.20.10)

A message from your "Cow-ordinator"!

Grilling Season is upon us!

1. FYI that our next cow is scheduled for delivery on 4.18.12, likely between 10-12PM. A more specific time slot will be given when we know it. Donkey will be there to manage the delivery, so please make arrangements with her for pick up if you are not planning to attend the nooner class that day. The cow will arrive frozen solid, and if you prefer to leave a cooler there with your name on it, she will put things into the cooler for you until you can get there. If you cannot arrive until much later in the day, definitely work with Donkey on options.

2. 6 of 8 shares of our next cow have sold, leaving 2 shares. This cow will be delivered on 6.20.12, with money due to Donkey on 5.26.12 (you can once again leave it in the envelope at the box or pay via paypal if you prefer--just make sure you indicate it's for KOP). This is the last cow that will maintain our current tier of pricing with Philly CowShare. After this, prices will definitely go up, although we have not yet received a new price list from them.

3. After the 6.20 cow, we have two more that will be delivered directly to KOP for the year: 8.22 (just in time for Labor Day) and 10.24 (just in time for Halloween? snow season?? ha ha!)

W.O.D. 4.8.12

Happy Easter!
We WILL be having a 9AM and 10AM class today.
Only our kids classes are cancelled.

AMRAP in 5 minutes of:
Squat clean, 165#(men)/110#(women)
Jerk, 165#(men)/110#(women)

Note:
This was the open sectional WOD 11.3 from last year click here to read about it on Constantly Varied. Today's WOD will also have an "Easter" component to it!

You can think of this workout in many different ways, in fact, at least 10 ways:
-squat clean and press
-squat clean and push press
-squat clean and push jerk
-squat clean and split jerk
-squat clean and thruster
-power clean and front squat and press
-power clean and front squat and push press
-power clean and front squat and push jerk
-power clean and front squat and split jerk
-power clean and front squat and thruster

The whole point is that you must achieve 3 key points:
1. the bar must start on the ground
2. you must be in a squat below parallel with the bar in a rack position
3. you must lock the bar out overhead in a stable position with hips, knees, and arms locked out with feet underneath the hips
