  3. Since no one wants a class, I will start a discussion. What are your thoughts on the sickness-fitness continuum? Is someone that has a six pack but high cholesterol fit? What if I can deadlift 3x body weight but my resting heart rate is 90 beats per minute? Discuss.

  4. We discussed this at the nutrition talk LP and I did on Saturday. We both agree that health and performance are not the same and in my opinion, they can be inversely proportional. An elite marathoner most likely is putting 80-110 miles in each week or a powerlifter is most likely taking some sort of illegal/performance enhancing drug...both excel in their respective sports, but I would deem neither healthy in a "live long with no complications" sort of way.

Even before all of that, you probably need to define fitness and health. I said "performance" above, but I would not describe either example as being "fit." To me, fitness is about overall ability aka jack of all trades. Who can do most things well? This is what CrossFit is about. Health is related to fitness, but fitness is not required to be healthy. If someone didn't work out, but kept their nutrition in check, I bet they would be pretty darn healthy. You might be able to hedge some bad effects from aging (like muscle loss) by training, but that's related more to fitness than it is to health.

In the end, a lot of it comes down to genetics and goals. If you have the hardware to be great, and you want to be, I wouldn't blame you. If I had the tools to be a world class power lifter and the goal of becoming one, heck yeah I would do anything to get there. That's what separates those folks from the rest of us. If health was their primary concern, then they wouldn't go to the extremes that they do to be great.

  5. I think just because you look healthy doesnt mean you are. Also being able to perform a specific task really well like a deadlift doesnt equal that either. I have a friend who can run all day. No matter how hard I train he'll always be able to run further and faster than me. Is he healthy? Not even in the slightest. He eats like crap. He has chronic health issues too. The issue is I take heat because I simply weigh more and cant run as fast. Fitness is all encompassing. Just because you have a 6 pack doesn't equal being fit. That may just be genetics. You can also be fit and not look it.

Fitness to me is being able to function well at life as well as in the gym.

  8. "if someone didn't work out, but kept their nutrition in check, I bet they would be pretty darn healthy." I kind of disagree...you don't need to "work out" in the traditional sense to be pretty darn healthy...but I think you have to be active. When time did that article on groups of people in the world that lived into the 100's they had a few things in common....they moved a lot, they ate all different diets but they were not eating processed food, and they were HAPPY (i.e. not a lot of stress).

  9. P.S. I think a big part of being "healthy" is also about how you feel...the wellness component. if your working out and eating well and feel like shit...im going to say your not completely healthy either. Truth is health is a balancing act. you can't separate physical from mental, you cannot separate nutrition from movement....you need to address all.
