  1. The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
    Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

  2. Woohoo! Geeks representing with the Tolkien references!

Anyone into fantasy should definitely pick up A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin. Just a word of warning though, the series (A Song of Ice and Fire) is supposed to be 7 books and only 4 have been published so far. Waiting on the 5th now for 4 or 5 years.... but in the mean time I've re-read the available ones at least 3 times each.... they're that good.

Oh, and there's an HBO series based on A Game of Thrones coming out in April too.

  3. Since everyone was quiet about why they CrossFit, I am putting a spin on it for today...

Is there anyone that should NOT CrossFit?

    Discuss..

  4. Song of Ice & Fire is incredible. Can't wait for mini-series and book #5, though I can't complain too much since I just became a convert recently.

As for the poem, I'm more partial to "The road goes on forever and the party never ends..."

  5. Hi Jason,
Interesting spin on your question. I think anyone can DO crossfit but I don't think it is for everyone at any given time. I just think that timing can be a factor and having a "can-do" attitude contributes to the success someone can have with this.
I have a specific example in mind but it is too long to type.

  6. You Song of Ice and Fire fans should check out Steven Erikson's "Malazan Book of the Fallen". I felt that Ice and Fire was the best Epic Fantasy series I had ever encountered, until I read the Book of the Fallen. As a bonus, it is a 10 book series, and the 10th book is being released next month. Yes, you heard correctly, an epic fantasy series that will actually be completed.

As far as people who shouldn't CrossFit, anyone who doesn't want to be better, to succeed or to be more fit shouldn't CrossFit.

  7. I will check that out Borden.

And for people who shouldn't crossfit, elite athletes who are training very specifically to their sport. That's about all I can think of. I mean, for a power lifter, there's no need for them (when they're only powerlifting) to be able to sprint or run for any long distance. Same thing with long distance runners and strength.

Now, is it healthy for those people? I'm pretty sure we can all agree that being well-rounded is a much healthier option, but I think that should be true with all aspects of your life, not just fitness. Seems to me like when you get to those extremes you're more likely to encounter more issues....

  8. I think anyone CAN do Crossfit. i think that there are a population of people that are disabled to the point that they couldn't do classes even scaled to start (theyd have to start with personal training of a class specfic tailored to them). But I am proof you can be obese and out of shape with no skill or previous experience and do it. But I also believe crossfit is not going to be for everyone. I suppose not everyone likes intensity. And people might not be into it at different points in their lives like Mel said.

and man there are a lot of geeks around here! ;-)

  9. Rhode Island is neither a road nor is it an island. Discuss....

    ReplyDelete
  10. @ Peterson:

Again Faster has Olympic lifters on their CF team and CF Harlem works closely with Kendrick Farris who is just sick. Also, at Westside, many elite powerlifters do insanely high box jumps and what not...CrossFittish but not CF.

    @ Danny:

I forget the specifics but Rhode Island has a longer name. Rhode Island Plantations or something like that. I forget. So, two colonies merged and one of them was an island. So that is the island part. I don't know about the Rhode part. I do know that a lot of Rhode island is water so it is actualy bigger than people think.

  12. Since i have no game in the Sci-Fi lit area, I am can only chime in on Jason's question. In my mind the only people who should NOT do crossfit are people who bring a negative attitude to the box. The community of crossfit is absolutely one of its strengths and totally unique. Having someone who doesnt support others (cheering for others), doesnt appreciate different levels of ability/fitness (looking down on scaling), or makes demeaning comments about other people would certainly detract from the gym vibe.

This however, raises another question, can/should/would a Crossfit affiliate deny a potential membership to that gym if the person is known to have a negative attitude or doesnt appear to be a good fit with the existing culture?

Looks like I'll be taking a rest day today.

  20. Yeah, basically douchebags need to stay away. Also, I think that anyone *can* do it, but I think that the barrier to enter is much more mental than anything else. And I also think that only certain types of people are going to really be into it, crazy athletic people, geeks, and people with addictive personalities.

  22. I think anybody can do crossfit, but it helps to have really nice people around you like we have at KOP. If I had a dollar for every time I had to run out at the end of the wod to sit on the bathroom floor because I was sick to my stomach, I'd be a rich girl. But once its over, there is always someone, another crossfitter or a coach to encourage you and get you through the hard parts. This has been particularly helpful for someone like me who is motivated, but also very shy. I often wonder if community is the greatest motivator in crossfit.

  25. Thanks, just picked up the first Martin book in that series. I am hopefully optimistic on my upcoming allotment of free time. I even added an extra CrossFit day to my schedule.

I tried all day to think of a class of people who should not CrossFit. I was able to counter every segment I thought of.

  26. I don't think a crossfit affiliate is for everybody but I do think crossfit....as in functional movement and high intensity is for everybody even douchebags. Even the average gymrat should be doing presses, squats, deadlifts, pullups, etc..but due to the lack of good information out there most people just don't know any better. Maybe people don't want to do a wod but they can squat and then do some burpees in the gym as opposed to spending an hour on the ellptical. Yeah so functional movements and high intensity is for everyone whether its a wod at an affiliate or just making due with what they have in their back yard.

    ReplyDelete
  27. To joe:

But how can you read your People magazine while doing burpees and squats? I think a lot of people would rather just do the elliptical because they can see the calories they burned. They just focus too much on the destination instead of the journey!

    ReplyDelete
  28. True dat Peterson some folks see our movements as more of a novelty.

Kristen SB - GREAT pushups today. You got full ROM every time and that hard work is paying off! Plentus - crazy impressive with the weight vest. Todd- way to keep up the pace, great time!
